Shai Reshef runs a university. It’s has 6000 students in business, IT and health sciences, it’s rapidly growing, and its council is filled with academic luminaries including University of California Berkeley chancellor Nicholas Dirks and Oxford vice chancellor emeritus Sir Colin Lucas.
It’s easy to enrol. Anyone who has finished high school and speaks English is qualified. And the cost of tuition? Zero.
Reshef’s University of the People is the end point of an insight which came to him years ago when he owned a for-profit, online education company. He realised that all of the knowledge imparted in a university degree is available for free in the online creative commons. What’s more, all the technology you need to run online courses is open source and a new internet culture exists of people willing to volunteer to teach others.
