Freddie the tortoise is a great example of how modern technology can help disabled animals and drastically improve their lives.
Freddie’s shell was severely burned in a wildfire in the Amazon rainforest and he became the world’s first ever tortoise to get a new, artificial shell by means of 3D printing technology.
The shell was created by a group of vets and designers as well as a local artist who came together to create a new prosthetic shell for Freddy.
The shell is made from four corn-based plastic pieces that fit together like a jigsaw. Once the shell was assembled, artist Yuri Caldera painted it in such a way that Freddy is able to blend into his environment and stay safe from predators.
