and the highway patrol gave this account of the incident:
A Florida Highway Patrol officer arrived at the fishing pier north of the bridge on Interstate 275 and began talking with the man, not long after Farley delivered him to the nearby rest area around 8:30 Monday night, according to FHP spokesman Sgt. Steve Gaskins.
After a second trooper arrived, the man walked away and got into the water near the pier entrance off southbound I-275, Gaskins said.
Despite pleas from the troopers to return, the man submerged himself, leading Corporal Robert Friesen and Trooper Kristen Middleton to remove some of their gear and follow the man into the dark water, going completely below the surface to find him, Gaskins said.
After several minutes, the troopers located the unconscious man and brought him to shore, performing CPR until medical responders arrived and took him to Bayfront Medical Center.
