The 35-year-old began searching for his birth parents around six years ago. However he was heartbroken to discover that his father, Gerry Monaghan, from Co Donegal, had died tragically in a suspected hit-and-run just one year earlier.
On Monday he issued an appeal on Independent.ie for help locating Gerry’s Irish family. His father, who struggled with alcohol addiction throughout his life, lost touch with his Irish roots.
He said: “I would like to meet my relatives and to say ‘Hi’. I would like them to see that I turned out pretty okay I am a paediatrician and I have a very happy life.”
And it wasn’t long before his call was answered. Less than 24 hours later, Geraldine Monaghan who is originally from Ballyshannon but living in the Midlands, contacted this website to say she believed she was Ben’s aunt.
