1Pet1Vet finds the dogs they train at animal shelters where they would otherwise be euthanized, so really, the dogs and veterans are saving each other. Veterans are first introduced to the dogs when they are 8 weeks old, but come to the facility in Manteno four times per week to train until they can take them home at 22 weeks. They continue to train them after they bring them home, and even bring them back to the facility on Saturdays so all of the service dogs can socialize and play with each other.
Registration for the first session on Saturday begins at 6:30 a.m., and the golfing begins at 8 a.m. After that, there will be a halftime ceremony from 1 to 2 p.m. that will include the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of the national anthem, the veteran’s version of “Hallelujah” and a recognition of all of the veterans present. …
