Jay Downing, 48, had a rare condition that meant he was born with seven kidneys – five more than the average person.
Six of the kidneys were tightly packed in his left and right abdonimal cavities while a seventh was located closer to his posterior.
Mr. Downing wasn’t even aware he had the condition until he got whiplash and went for an X-Ray.
On making the discovery he quickly decided to give five of his kidneys to donors.
The recipients include a mother of five, a young girl, and a self-described “frail old woman”.
Mr. Downing claims he is also considering donating a sixth kidney.
The hospital recently awarded Mr. Downing with a bronze kidney statue as a “tribute to his heroism”.
