COLUMBIA TWP., MI – Matt Duckham had to act quickly to save his mother and dog who were struggling in the icy water of the pond behind their home.
Duckham’s daughter was playing outside with the family’s dog, Patches, on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at their home in the 5600 block of S. Stoney Lake Road.
Then, the 8-month-old German shepherd took off toward the pond.
“We couldn’t find her and a passerby came by and said, ‘If you’re looking for a dog, she fell through the ice,'” Duckham said.
With temperatures dropping below freezing, most bodies of water have 8 inches to a foot of ice on them, said Columbia Township Fire Chief Scott Cota.
But this private pond has three bubblers in it that keep the ice thin or even absent in some areas, Cota said.
Trying desperately to save the treading pup, Duckham’s mother went out onto the ice, but she fell in.
