Symon Castillo, 22, suffered a brain injury when he fell off a ledge June 30 in Fort Worth in what his family is calling a “freak accident,” KDFW-TV (Channel 4) reports. He died five days later.
“Anybody that knew him loved his smile,” his aunt Monica Castillo told KDFW. “He was just amazing. He was just a giver.”
True to that giving nature, Castillo was an organ donor, and his heart and one of his kidneys were going to recipients in Houston.
His other kidney went to his father, Nate Castillo of Fort Worth, who had been awaiting a match for a kidney transplant.
After determining that father and son were a match, doctors at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth and Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas moved quickly to get Nate Castillo into surgery.
The family says the elder Castillo still faces a long recovery, but his life has been saved by his son’s kidney.
